Put the brakes on fracking

Local people take to bikes to call for halt to fracking

**Spokespeople from Ribble Estuary Against Fracking and Friends of the Earth will be available for interview in Preston city centre between 4-5pm on Sunday 20 May. Riders will be gathering in Preston Flag Market at 4.30pm, cycling down Fishergate and arriving at Lancashire County Hall at 4.45pm **

Local anti-fracking campaigners are taking to their bikes this Sunday 20 May to highlight the risks to the Lancashire countryside from shale gas drilling. Friends of the Earth, Residents Action on Fylde Fracking (RAFF) and Ribble Estuary Against Fracking (REAF) are joining forces to organise bike rides from Southport and Blackpool to Preston. Over 40 riders are expected to take part in the rides which will culminate in a protest in Preston city centre.

The bike protest is timed to coincide with the last weekend of a Government consultation into fracking and safety risks. The Department for Energy and Climate Change consultation, which ends on 25 May, comes on the back of a report which found that fracking caused earthquakes near Blackpool last year.

The campaign groups are calling on Lancashire County Council to refuse further planning permission for Cuadrilla exploration sites, and for the Government to carry out a full scientific assessment of the risks.

Friends of the Earth’s North West Campaigner Helen Rimmer said:

“Communities across Lancashire are sending a clear message that we don’t want fracking in the county. Residents in the Fylde already know of the risks of earth tremors, and it’s also been linked to water pollution and climate change.

“Hundreds of wells across Lancashire would have a devastating impact on the countryside and could wreck our vital farming and tourism economies.

"We should be developing the huge potential of clean energy from the sun, wind and waves, not more dirty and dangerous fossil fuels."
